An Evening with Ian Urbina

Jan 22, 2020  6:30PM - 9:30PM

Location:  Vancouver Aquarium
Cost:  Free

Doors 6:30 PM Talk 7:00 PM

Join Ocean Wise for a talk by celebrated author and ocean champion, Ian Urbina. Ian will discuss his ‘Outlaw Ocean’ reporting which was originally published in The New York Times. Several of his stories have been adapted into major feature films, including The Outlaw Ocean which was purchased by Netflix and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Outlaw Ocean reporting took Ian across 5 seas and 14 countries. Ian encountered the story of a Burmese migrant who was shackled by the neck on a trawler and enslaved at sea for 3 years. He shadowed a Tanzanian stowaway who was set overboard on a raft and left to die. And he stayed on a Thai trawler with 40 Cambodian boys who worked 20-hour days, barefoot, rain or shine, on a slippery deck, just one misstep from disaster. For most of us, the ocean represents a vacation destination, but Ian Urbina has learned it is a lawless frontier. A powerful speaker, Ian’s talk to an intimate Ocean Wise audience will cover some of the ocean’s most unknown threats including slavery, overfishing and human trafficking. Ian Urbina lives in Washington D.C. with his family.
