Changing Tides: Discussing diversity in the ocean industry
A panel discussion series addressing underrepresented workers in the blue economy.
Each month, we will be speaking with leaders in the ocean economy on the following topics, supporting the advancement of African Canadians in ocean tech, encouraging economic growth for Indigenous-owned companies, making space for women, scoping and retaining skilled immigrants and international student graduates, and shifting gears mid-career.
On August 12 we will be hosting our Inuit, First Nations and Indigenous panel, and I was hoping you would participate in this conversation. As you are well aware, Inuit, Indigenous and First Nation workers are significantly under-represented in the ocean economy – from trades careers through entrepreneurship as well as in research and professional roles. We’d like to highlight some of the challenges faced by Inuit, Indigenous and First Nation workers as they consider ocean careers. It is our hope that you would be willing to share some of your insights, and challenges you experienced in your journey as well as your thoughts on how this industry can make better inroads with underrepresented groups. In particular, it would be great if you could share some of your insights on engaging youth in your community in the Blue Economy with projects like Smart Ice.
This session will be moderated by Denise Pothier, and I will work with her to prepare questions that we will send to panelists before-hand so that they can mentally prepare for how they would like to respond. This will be a conversation-style panel though – no presentations, no PowerPoints. The panel discussion itself is 60 minutes on August 12th (from 1-2pm). Our moderator usually leads the conversation from COVE – but the attendees will all join via zoom.
