Join your hosts Lizzie Duncan, Research Ecologist and West Coast Deep Sea Coral Initiative Coordinator and Lisa Woonick Policy Coordinator NOAA/Office of National Marine Sanctuaries/ West Coast Region to learn from scientists about the magnificent deep sea coral and sponge communities in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and Santa Lucia Bank and Escarpment in the Proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary. You will explore some newly discovered (but ancient) glass sponge reefs, petrale sole spawning stations, and deep sea coral gardens and also learn about the concept of "thrivability" and what it means for an ocean area to be nominated as a national marine sanctuary.
