Jackie Saturno (she/her) is a queer environmental scientist and National Geographic Explorer (grantee ’17 and ’21) based in Toronto, Canada. During her MSc., she was awarded a National Geographic grant to study fishing gear related plastic pollution in Newfoundland and Labrador. During this time, she has co-developed an experiment to test chaffing fishing ropes and their ability to create microplastics! Upon returning home to Toronto last year and being under lockdown due to the pandemic, Jackie and her partner, Justine Ammendolia, began scientifically surveying COVID-19 related plastic pollution in their neighbourhood. This initiative has since gained national coverage and inspired other people around the work to collect and track PPE in their own backyards.
