An abolitionist and icon of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman played a lesser-known role as a naturalist in the mid-1800s. Some historians refer to her as the "ultimate outdoorswoman,” because she navigated using the stars, found food and medicine among wild plants, and expertly leveraged landscapes and waterways in travel routes for herself and others. She even used bird calls, most notably the call of barred owls, to guide her charges!
