George is a senior education and research specialist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing, California. This means he gets the best of two worlds, working on a combination of research and education projects. A native Californian, George is third generation Japanese and grew up in southern California. During his final year at UCB George was was able to get scientific diver certified which has had a huge influence in his life. Despite having “abominable grades" early in his university studies, he ended up studying gelatinous zooplankton for his degree using SCUBA, Human occupied vehicles, and remotely operated vehicles around the world to collect specimens and observations. He has since discovered multiple new species and is a a world renowned expert on cone jellies!
