Earlier this year, the Water Resources Division of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy included the inner portion of Saginaw Bay in its list of impaired waters—due to algal growth from persistent nutrient loading. With this designation, a new Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is being developed to identify reduction goals to address it.
